@noffle I know absolutely nothing about server admin but I am very happy using bits of indieweb. There is also micro.blog which is even more accessible than WithKnown.

Yeah, also a bunch of indieweb stuff is quite usable with Jekyll/Pelican/etc. static sites, which can be hosted pretty much anywhere, including GitHub pages. Not to mention the IndieWeb plugins for WordPress. You absolutely don't have to run your own server stack to get interop.
